| Context of use | Regular maintenance after every ride, cleaning after muddy and rough terrain rides, preparation before important events, seasonal equipment inspections, everyday use |
1. Prepare your bike or motorcycle
Position the vehicle securely on a stand or flip the bicycle upside down. Make sure you have comfortable access to the chain and cassette.
2. Apply cleaning product
Apply an appropriate cleaner or degreaser (e.g. OC1 Chain Cleaner) to the chain, cassette and derailleurs. Wait 1–2 minutes to let the product soften the dirt.
3. Use the appropriate brush heads
Start with the cassette — use the narrow head to reach between the sprockets. Then wrap the round head around the chain and move the brush along its length while rotating the pedals backward. Use the flat head to clean derailleurs and sprockets.
4. Use the scraper for stubborn dirt
If you encounter dried mud or grease, gently use the built-in scraper. Don't press too hard — the goal is to remove contamination, not scratch the surface.
5. Rinse and dry
Rinse the drivetrain with clean water or wipe with a damp cloth. Finally, thoroughly dry all components with a clean towel or leave to air dry.
Important
Do not use the brush on hot drivetrain components. Before cleaning, make sure the bike or motorcycle has cooled down after riding. Avoid overly aggressive scrubbing — the brush is designed to remove dirt effectively without excessive force.
Tip
After cleaning, always lubricate the chain with an appropriate lubricant (e.g. OC1 Chain Lube). A clean but unlubricated chain wears out even faster than a dirty one. Regular cleaning every 2–3 rides in dry conditions or after each muddy ride will significantly extend your drivetrain's life.
Is the brush suitable for both bicycles and motorcycles?
Yes, the OC1 drivetrain brush is universal and works great with all chain types — bicycle, motorcycle and ATV. Whether you ride MTB, enduro motorcycle or ATV, this brush will effectively clean your drivetrain.
Can I damage the chain using this brush?
No, if you use it as intended. The nylon bristles are hard enough to remove dirt, yet safe for all drivetrain components. Just avoid pressing too aggressively with the scraper on delicate surfaces.
Do I need to use special cleaning products?
The brush works best with dedicated drivetrain cleaners (e.g. OC1 Chain Cleaner), but you can also use it with other degreasers. The key is to apply the product first and give it time to soften the dirt.
How often should I clean the drivetrain?
It depends on riding conditions. After every ride in mud, sand or rain, it's worth cleaning the drivetrain. In dry conditions, cleaning every 2–3 rides or when the chain starts running louder than usual is sufficient.
Will the brush help with heavily neglected drivetrains?
Yes, but heavily neglected drivetrains may require several passes. In such cases, first apply cleaning product, wait a few minutes, then work with the brush section by section. The built-in scraper handles dried grease and mud excellently.
Can I wash the brush in a dishwasher?
We recommend hand washing the brush in warm water with mild detergent. After washing, rinse thoroughly and leave to dry. This will ensure long bristle life and cleaning effectiveness.
How long will the OC1 brush last?
With regular, proper use, the brush will serve you for many seasons. The nylon bristles are very durable and don't lose their properties even after hundreds of uses.
Does the brush remove rust from the chain?
The brush will remove surface rust and dirt, but won't eliminate deep corrosion. If your chain is heavily rusted, it may require specialised anti-corrosion products or replacement.
Do I need other tools for comprehensive drivetrain cleaning?
The OC1 brush is the essential tool that handles 90% of the work. For even better results, you can complement it with a detail brush (for cleaning cassette sprockets) plus a good cleaner and chain lubricant.
Can I use the brush on other bike/motorcycle parts?
The brush was designed for drivetrains, but you can also use it to clean other muddy components such as fenders, swingarms or shock absorbers. However, avoid using it on delicate painted surfaces.
